Observatory of open source hardware
Welcome to the Observatory of Open Source Hardware dedicated to watch and monitor the field of open source hardware. It gathers information about open source hardware products in order to feed the public debate around this phenomenon. It particularly strives addressing the following issues:
- What is open source hardware? Provide examples of open source hardware products. Put pictures behind words.
- How many products are out there? Provide insights on the maturity and relevance of the open source hardware phenomenon. Give an overview of the field.
- How can I “open” my product? Identify and share best practices. Inspire practitioners for creating efficient open source hardware documentation.
- How open is open source hardware? Deliver metrics for measuring openness, which is a multifaceted concept.
Focus
The Observatory of Open Source Hardware focuses specifically on complex non-electronic hardware. The idea is to highlight the emergence of open source hardware outside the sphere of electronic hardware and of 3D printed gimmicks. There are now increasing numbers of those complex products such as tractors, machine tools, medical equipment and so on. For more information about this focus, see section "selection criteria" for more information.
Open data approach
The approach is to gather and characterize products in an Open Source Hardware Directory in order to identify key trends in the field. Of course, we adhere to the philosophy that distributed work in communities is more efficient than a one-man-effort (under the well-known motto: “given enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow”). All information on this site is published under an open source license and contributions are welcomed. If you know products which are not referenced in the Directory, feel free to add it. If you feel some pieces of information are missing or not correct, your edits are welcome!
